Rug Making Workshop in London: What to Expect at Cheeky Studio
If you've been searching for a rug making workshop in London and aren't sure what to expect, this is for you. We get a lot of first-timers walking through our door at Cheeky Studio in Hackney Wick — and almost everyone says the same thing afterwards: "That was so much easier than I thought."
Here's exactly what happens when you book a session with us.
Before You Arrive
Once you've booked, you'll get a confirmation with everything you need to know. We ask you to submit your design idea at least 48 hours before your session — a sketch, a photo reference, or even just a description. Our team will sketch it onto your canvas in advance so you can walk in and get straight to tufting.
Not sure what design to choose? Our Tufting Guidelines page breaks down what works best for the process.

When You Arrive
We're based at D009, Tradestars, 415 Wick Lane, Hackney Wick, London E3 2JG — right in the heart of East London's creative quarter. Your frame, tufting gun, and yarn are all set up and waiting.
First thing: pick your colours. We stock 115 shades of Cheeky Yarn — our own GRS-certified yarn made from 100% recycled PET. Whether you're going bold or keeping it neutral, the colour wall tends to take a few minutes to navigate.

The Workshop Itself
We run two formats:
Standard Rug — 3 hours, 40×40cm finished rug, £170 per person. This is our most popular session. Perfect for beginners, date nights, birthday groups, and anyone who wants to try tufting for the first time.
Grand Rug — 5 hours, 55×55cm finished rug, £220 per person. More time, more space, more rug. Ideal if you want to go bigger or work on a more detailed design.
Both sessions are capped at 8 people maximum, so every tufter gets proper attention. Our instructors guide you through the technique from the very first pass — how to hold the gun, how to move it, how to handle corners and curves.
No art skills needed. Genuinely. Some of the best rugs we've seen have come from people who described themselves as "completely uncreative."
Taking Your Rug Home
This is the part people are always surprised by: if your rug is fully tufted during the session, you can take it home the same day. We handle the backing and finishing — you leave with a completed, ready-to-display rug.
If there's finishing work still to do, you can collect it from the studio or have it delivered for £3.
